Thank you all for the very kind notes of support so far. Quite a few of you already even subscribed for updates. I feel a little guilty; there’s probably not going to be a lot here until I figure out my next steps.
But since I have you here, I’m going to take advantage of a somewhat unique opportunity.
When you’ve been on the Internet for a long time like me and have accumulated followers for all sorts of reasons — on Twitter, this can run the gamut from passionate interest to professional courtesy to hate-reading — it’s not that often you get a self-selected sample of people who really support you. So I want to know more about what you’re most interested in from me.
As I wrote about on Tuesday, I’m essentially trying to carve out a new beat for myself that’s less politics-centric. That doesn’t mean no politics — just more selective about where I can add value. So here is a link to a Google Forms survey that asks for your interest in a set of a couple dozen topics on a scale of 1 (not at all interested) to 5 (super-duper interested). All of these are subjects I feel at least somewhat qualified to write about or at least have the right network to do some reporting and learn more about.
To be more specific, I’d like to know how interested you are in coverage of the subject from me and/or a team or a project that I’d be associated with. Maybe you’re very interested in dog grooming, for instance, but you think any analysis of dog grooming that I’d do would be terrible. In that case, give it a low rating. (Dog grooming is not actually one of the choices.)
How much am I going to abide by these ratings? If we’re being honest, probably not that much. But still, I’m interested in what sort of subjects pair well together as I’m considering new plans.
The survey does not require you to log in anywhere and it does not collect any personal information. But it does ask for the first three digits of your ZIP code as an anti-spam measure. (If half of the responses claim to be from Juneau, Alaska, something’s probably gone wrong.) If you feel uncomfortable providing this, just skip it.
I’m not going to blast this out on Twitter — that would undermine the whole purpose of a self-selected sample — though I might put it on Substack Notes. Feel more than free to pass this on to friends who you think might be interested as well.
Again, here’s the link. Thank you for your time!
Personally I'd want whatever project is next to have significant writing contributions from you. My feeling has been that as you've taken a step back from writing on 538 (presumably to work on the book) I've been less interested in it. It's not that the remaining staff are bad, but I've followed 538 since basically the beginning and find that your analysis (vs the more general "data driven journalism") is what I'm most interested in.
Good luck on figuring out where to go, and it's definitely a bummer that the mouse murdered 538.
Missed you on the latest pod.. What I really missed was your willingness to challenging the framing or the conventional wisdom. We need more courage in the media.
